Wootton Bassett Ladies met Cheltenham Civil Service in a must-win clash, with both teams at the wrong end of the West Clubs North Division 1 with only three points in four matches.
Wootton Bassett started nervously, and when defensive midfielder Tegan Buchanan was taken off with a knee injury the away side looked uncertain. They focused though, and started to play nice possession hockey. Suzanne Lello almost walked the ball into the goal moving past two defenders and cooly slotting the ball past the Cheltenham goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead. Tegan Buchanan was able to return to the field, and put in a solid defensive performance along with player of the match Helen Wright. A lovely short corner routine saw Suzanne Coles with the finish to make it 2-0 to Wootton Basset at half time.
During the half time break, the umpires insisted Wootton Bassett replaced the numbers on their 2nd strip, causing the team to look distracted for the opening ten minutes of the 2nd half. After soaking up the pressure with a number of defensive short-corners, Wootton Bassett settled and Vik Sammon was on hand to fire in a Wootton Bassett short corner, which was subsequently disallowed to the confusion of the mystified Wootton Bassett forwards.
Wootton Bassett were able to soak up further pressure, and saw out the match to win 2-0. The team face another important fixture against Westberries next week.
