Bassett started well but allowed West Wilts too much open space and the opposing side began to dominate, pressing home their attacks with a short-corner shot deflected off a defender’s knee, shortly followed by a pass which found an unmarked player on the goalpost who nudged the ball home past goalkeeper Joe Soden ’s desperate lunge. Despite being 2-0 down Bassett fought back and as players settled into their positions they used their speed with Rob Appleby scoring a well-worked individual goal. However Bassett then allowed Wilts back into the game and went into half time 3-1 down.
The second half saw a more aggressive Bassett side and they started to open up the opposition’s defence with quicker, more accurate passing, being rewarded with a number of short corners one of which was slotted home by Nick Thomson with a shot into the bottom left corner. This gave Bassett the impetus they needed and with midfield legend Neil Miles controlling the play they attacked with real aggression. Effective passes strung together by Jack Williams and man of the match Craig McLauchlin, coupled with the dogged determination of Ben Henshaw saw Appleby collect the ball at the top of the D and power a shot past the keeper. Despite being under increasing pressure Wilts managed to hang on and Bassett finished the game with a well-earned draw and their first points of the season. Next week they entertain Chippenham D at home which promises to be another tough game.
