The match started with both sides evenly matched with end-to-end play but both sides failing to make much inroads into their opponents ‘D’. Swindon were to first to find the net with a sweetly struck short corner which rocketed past the keeper to hit the top of the backboard. This gave Swindon the confidence they needed and by half time they had scored again to make it 0-2 at the break.
Bassett started the second half on the attack but despite having a number of short corners they were unable to convert any of them. Pushing up to try and find their first elusive goal left them weak at the back and a breakaway by Swindon saw the initial shot saved by keeper Mike Hayward (making a post-retirement comeback) but the rebound was slotted away by the attacking forward. Bassett never lost heart and kept the pressure up, youngster Craig McLauchlin working hard to deserve his man-of-the-match award, but they always lacked the clinical finishing of the other side. Next week they travel to North Wilts for a bottom of the table clash which will hopefully see Bassett’s first league goal.
