At first the two sides seemed evenly matched with the Bassett defence of Archie Neale and Mike Simpson resisting the Wilts attacking moves and allowing counter-attacks down the left wing with some good interplay between Ben Henshaw and Andrew Cooper.
Centre-half Jack Twine and centre-forward Milind Thapa (in his first-ever game) combined well to worry the slower Wilts defence and forced some short corners but were unable to take advantage. The opposition grew in confidence as the game progressed and Bassett went into the half time break 2 goals down.
The game restarted in a similar vein with West Wilts converting a couple of short corners in quick succession, however Bassett never lost heart. The energy and enthusiasm of new yougsters Ben Hares and Tom Fieldsend kept the pressure on the Wilts defence but were unable to achieve a breakthrough. As the team tired there were frequent skirmishes in the Bassett D and it was only due to some great reflex saves by Bassett keeper Joe Soden that the deficit was kept to a respectable five.
