Young Lyons Roar

Despite lacking in experience of league hockey, it was the young players in the Bassett team who lit up this hard fought match. It was a game on a very sodden surface and a contest in which the hosts had to twice come from behind to salvage a result. Moreover, it was the refusal of the whole team to give in and the efforts of two of the younger players which turned the game in Bassett’s favour.

As the score line reflects, this was a very even contest: North Wilts took the lead fairly early in the first half, but before the break, Bassett managed to equalise through Tony Cooper’s conversion of an Andy Lyon’s cross. Indeed, to an extent, the second half mirrored the first: another early strike by North Wilts was later cancelled out by a strike from man-of–the-match Andy Lyons. However, this time Bassett had time to capitalise on their growing confidence and yet again it was Lyons who was on hand to supply Cooper for his second.

Significanly, this is Bassett’s second ever win in the league and, given the impact the younger players had, this does suggest there is more to come both this season and in the future.
