Third time lucky for Bassett’s newly formed 3rd XI...

Bassett’s newest team lined up for their third ever league game having lost their two previous matches. However, the blues arrived at the pitch-side ready, and determined to win. There was little time to warm up so both teams had to prepare quickly and dive into action.

As the game began, both sides flung into action, but there was little magic. The pressure seemed equal from both sides. Although Bassett gained a couple of short corners, the defensive aspect of the team was tested with a couple of good saves from Rob Pamphilon in response to a furtive attack from West Wilts. The stalemate soon subsided when James Wright ran the ball to the top of the D and struck it home to give Bassett the lead. Spurred on from this 1-0 lead, the Bassett side became stronger and started to play more effectively as a team. After successfully defending a short corner, a rapid attack was bought to a climax as JP Terry scored the second goal, greeted by cheers and a firm 2-0 lead at half time.

After having no substitutes for the first half, Bassett gained another man as Rupert Pearce arrived on the scene. The air was getting warmer and the opposition came back strong and tested the back line to the limits. Amid this chaos, West Wilts managed to score their first goal with an impressive shot bringing the score to 2-1. The blues knew they had to put the pressure back on, and slowly the play swung into their favour again. Bassett managed to become more resilient at the front and the number of attempts on goal increased. There were times when West Wilts managed to break through into attack mode but thanks the strong back line, Bassett didn’t concede. JP Terry then fired a shot high into the net, beating the away team’s giant goalkeeper and taking the final score to 3-1.
