Wootton Bassett Ladies took on top of the table Marlborough in an important league match. Wootton Bassett started as they meant to continue, keeping focus and solid in defence. Despite some early Marlborough pressure, Wootton Bassett held strong, keeping out a number of short corners. Joint player of the match, goalkeeper Laura Brown, made a number of sterling diving saves to keep the opposition at bay. Eventually the Marlborough pressure paid off, with Brown making a good first save but an unmarked forward picked up the rebound and flung it into the top corner of the goal.
Wootton Bassett went into the second half 1-0 down, but continued to work hard at both ends of the pitch, with some solid defence including a joint player of the match performance from Abby Thomas. Marlborough scored a second through a well worked corner, then a third on the break as two players slipped their markers leaving Brown with too much to do. Wootton Bassett fought back, winning a short corner. Some lovely one-two play from the corner between Tegan Buchanan and Ceri Burgess led to a Buchanan goal. This seemed to shock Marlborough into a passage of play where they piled up the pressure. Two quick goals put them up 5-1. Wootton Bassett continued to put the effort in despite looking tired towards the end of the match. A Burgess shot was stopped on the goal line by a Marlborough defender's foot, and Helen Wright stepped up to slot the resultant penalty stroke home. At 5-2 Wootton Bassett saw defender Zara Salisbury struck with a stick to the face, ending her involvement in the match. The contest finished 5-2, a result which sees Marlborough retain their top spot and Wootton Bassett slip to 5th, having been leapfrogged by their next week's opposition BAC.
