Wootton Bassett 4-1 Mendip

Wootton Bassett got off to a great start in their match against Mendip on Saturday when Katy Cox and Becky Thomas linked up well to create Cox with an early chance on goal which she converted powerfully past the Mendip keeper. The home side had the upper hand in the first fifteen minutes with lots of attacks and possession and they looked comfortable playing the ball around the pitch. However, a lapse in concentration from the Bassett side mid way through the half led Mendip to capitalise on an ‘against the run of play’ chance and score the equaliser. The rest of the half was more even with end to end play, Helen Wright and Bex Fortnam made some great tackles in the Bassett defence and Megan Emms in goal made some great saves to keep Bassett in the game. Just before half time Bassett were awarded a couple of short corners and Thomas was unlucky not to add to the score line with her drag flick effort.

The second half began and Bassett were determined to win this match, and it showed! They were definitely the stronger of the two teams in this half and Cox scored her second for Bassett about ten minutes in after a great spell of pressure from the home side. Excellent work from Vic Sammon, Thomas and Tegan Buchanan in midfield allowed the Bassett team to build some admirable attacks down both sides of the pitch and create many chances. Eleanor Hayward got Bassett’s third goal when she got a great finishing touch on the right post after Emma Collison’s initial shot was heading just wide. The Mendip defence were doing their best to keep the Bassett attacks at bay but in doing this did give away a string of penalty corners, Buchanan had a great shot at goal from one short corner but the Mendip keeper got a hand to it to push it past the post! Abi Turner got a superb deflection on a direct ball into the D from Thomas just before the end whistle to wrong foot the keeper and make the final score 4-1 to Bassett. Cox and Buchanan were voted joint players of the match.
