Bassett lose out in re-arranged fixture

Bassett didn't get off to the best of starts this Saturday in their rearranged fixture against Salisbury at home, they found it hard to settle and were struggling to pick up the Salisbury attackers and unfortunately let in an early goal. The home side did seem to improve slightly after letting the goal in and strung some good passes together and created chances for themselves, Abi Turner had a one on one chance but the Salisbury keeper came out to the top of her D to successfully thwart Turner from scoring. Bassett also had some short corners awarded to them in the first half but were unable to convert any as the Salisbury defence held strong. Salisbury scored their second goal mid way into the half but Bassett weren't willing to give up. They battled hard for the rest of the half, Helen Wright made some great tackles in defence and saved a ball off the line whilst Becky Thomas worked hard in midfield and was rewarded when her great run down the right and along the back line lead to Bassett’s first goal after she slipped the ball just inside the far post from a very tight angle! Bassett had looked as though they had finally found their feet in the game for the last ten minutes of the half but were unlucky to let in a goal from a short corner just before the whistle, making the score 3-1.

Bassett played better in the second half but still weren't up to their usual standard, they did however have a lot more possession and created more chances, Katy Cox and Rebekah Taylor made some great runs down the wings. Salisbury were very good on the break and did seem to be able to find the gaps in the Bassett defence, they got their fourth goal from a great deflection off of a short corner strike which went high into the net past Megan Emms in goal. Cox and Turner both had chances in the second half but the ball always ended up just the wrong side of the post! Emms in goal had a great game for Bassett and made plenty of fantastic diving saves but even she couldn’t keep out Salisbury’s fifth goal. Turner gave some consolation to the Bassett side when she got a great touch on a long through ball from Tracy Fieldsend to put it through the keeper’s legs and into goal about five minutes from the end of the match. The final score was 2-5 and Becky Thomas was voted player of the match.
