Bassett move into 2nd place after win over West Wilts

Bassett had an unsettled start to their away match against West Wilts this Saturday when a car load of their players arrived only just in time for the start of the match as a result of a road diversion!! West Wilts took advantage of the rocky start by Bassett and enjoyed the majority of possession within the first ten minutes and opened the score line when a long cross into the D was converted by an alert attacker. Bassett bounced straight back and within minutes Rebekah Taylor converted a great one on one chance with the keeper after calmly taking her time to place the ball just out of the oncoming keeper’s reach. The West Wilts speedy right winger made some great runs for the home side on many occasions in the first half but Tracy Fieldsend tracked her well in left defence and made it hard for her to penetrate the D. Unfortunately Bassett went down to ten players for five minutes when a yellow card was shown but Bassett worked extra hard to cover and still managed to push forward with the ball. Bassett’s second goal came from some great work in midfield by Vic Sammon who released an accurate ball up into the D for Abi Turner to latch onto, the initial shot was saved by the keeper but Kelly Lusted slotted the ball home from a great position on the left post.

The second half was better for Bassett, they started strongly with their third goal coming early on when Emma Collison made an interception on the left and ran the ball all the way to and along the back line before passing the ball off to Lusted who swept home her second. West Wilts tried to fight back but to no avail, the Bassett defence held strong and defended a number of short corners. A lot of the remaining play was carried out in the middle of the pitch with the odd break away chance for both teams. In the closing minutes of the match Bassett were awarded a short corner which Becky Thomas scored from with a drag flick making the final score 1-4. Thomas was voted player of the match. The 3 points move Bassett into 2nd place in East Division leading into the Christmas break.
