Two goals from Tegan Buchanan keeps Bassett in the game

A depleted Bassett 1st team travelled to Mendip for an early start on Saturday. Bassett started the match well with the majority of possession and good linking passes between the midfield and attack but failed to take advantage of this great spell of play. Ten minutes in and Mendip seemed to become more alert, they worked the ball well between themselves creating some nice attacking runs up the wing. The Bassett defence held off the attacks for some time, but in the end the pressure told when Mendip took a quick long corner catching Bassett off guard which lead to the Mendip attacker placing the ball past Emms in goal to break the deadlock. Bassett kept their heads up and fought hard, the work paid off when Tegan Buchanan equalised just before half time after a solo run ended with a powerful strike into the bottom right hand corner of the goal.

The second half started with Mendip piling on the pressure winning quite a few short corners but they were unable to convert any. Bassett then picked up the pace with Vic Sammon and Emma Collison working hard in the midfield to move the ball up the pitch. Some chances fell to both Rebekah Taylor and Ceri burgess in front of the Mendip goal but unfortunately they went just wide of the post. Tegan Buchanan then lifted the Bassett player’s spirits when she went on another run from the half way line weaving past the Mendip tackles into the D for a reverse stick strike which beat the Mendip keeper on her near post. However Bassett’s joy didn’t last for too long, as shortly after, a Mendip strike on goal took an unlucky deflection off of a Bassett foot and headed past Emms high into the net. Both teams battled hard in the closing minutes to try and get the winner but the final score remained 2-2. Buchanan was voted player of the match. Bassett now have a week off league and face Cirencester 1st on Saturday for a friendly. League kicks off again on Sat 8th November when Bassett face top of the league Bournemouth 2nd away at Bournemouth.
