Wimborne Wayfarers (0) - (1) Wootton Bassett

Wootton Bassett 1st team travelled to Dorset on Sunday 27th Nov to play Wimborne Wayfarers in the 2nd round of the England Hockey women's trophy. After a tough league match on Saturday Bassett were tired but up for the challenge and started well in the 1st half with some good attacking play from Vicky Sammon and captain Emma Langdon. Wimborne responded well with some good breaks down the wing but these efforts were to no avail as the Bassett defence soaked up the pressure. Bassett then seemed to take control and got a succession of short corners, one of which was converted by Emma Collison on the post after an initial reverse stick strike from Tegan Buchanan from the top of the D was heading just wide. At half time it was clear that both teams were evenly matched but Bassett had the 1-0 lead and were feeling positive that they had that extra little bit of 'umph' needed to hold onto that lead. Wimborne came back fighting in the second half with a lot of possession and good use of switching play. Bassett faced a high number of short corners but great work by the Bassett defence and keeper Laura Brown kept the ball out of the net! Abi Iles, Sarah Price and Jenny Jones worked well together upfront to create chances and try to extend the lead but unfortunately Jenny Jones' goal was disallowed by the umpire much to her disappointment! In the closing minutes of the game player of the match Tegan Buchanan made a very impressive dive to save a shot heading just inside the post to keep the final score as 1-0. This win means Bassett are now through to the final 16 and face their next cup tie on Sunday 5th February.
