Wootton Bassett Ladies 1sts vs City of Bath Ladies 1sts

Bassett started off strongly in their first friendly of the new season putting good pressure on the COB defence which lead to some great interceptions and early chances. Ten minutes into the 1st half and the Bassett pressure paid off when Suzanne Lello pounced on a COB mistake just outside the D, dribbled round the keeper only to have her first shot saved by a defender on the line, but she was there to get the finishing touch under the keepers body when Suzanne Montgomery fired in the rebound. After the goal City of Bath seemed to wake up and started to string together some good attacks resulting in penalty corners. The Bassett defence did well to keep the ball out danger, with Charlotte Halden making some good saves in her debut match for the Bassett 1st team. Unfortunately Bassett let in a goal just before half time making the score 1-1.

The second half began with some excellent work from Vic Sammon and Sarah Newcombe who linked well with the Bassett midfield to work the ball up the pitch and feed the forwards. Bassett were rewarded a short corner early on and Suzanne Lello slotted home a straight strike from the top of the D making the score 2-1. Unfortunately Bassett seemed to lose concentration after getting the lead and let the new formation slip, leaving gaps which COB took advantage of and got a quick succession of goals. Bassett kept fighting, but despite their best efforts they could not get back into the game to regain the lead. The final score was 2-5 with Suzanne Lello being voted the player of the match.
