Wootton Basset slip to their first defeat of the season away at Shepton Mallet.

A bare 11 man Wootton Bassett travelled the long distance to Shepton Mallet in the hope of continuing their 100% win record in the league. However Bassett, from push back, looked out of shape and as result Shepton Mallet piled on the early pressure with several good on goal chances. The home side were initially held by some good defensive work and saves from Jack Rose. Despite all of this Bassett's fast attacks started to pay off with some opportunities in the D for Lawrence Winter and John Terry. The first goal of the game did fall to Bassett, a great shot from Luke Sailsbury was saved by the home keeper who put it in the direction of Anthony Matthews who slotted home. After the goal Shepton came out stronger controlling possession and quickly equalised. Shepton's pressure then started to tell on Bassett when a mistake from the defence allowed Shepton Mallet to take the led. Bassett had several opportunities in the opposition's D which they were unable to convert into equalisers.

Only 2-1 down at half time Bassett seemed not to be out of the game but were really lacking in their usual performances. Whereas Shepton seemed to grow in confidence and it was not long before they added to their lead from a sharp short corner. However the goal did not sink Bassett who were still determined to get something out of the game and a good spell deep in the opposition's half created chances for Martyn Chivers and Anthony Matthews. Bassett found a come-back goal in the form of Captain Mike Davies who placed his precise shot right in the bottom corner and out of reach for the home team's keeper. Shepton, again, came back with another goal and then later put the game to sleep scoring there 5th of the afternoon.

All in all Bassett fought hard but they did not show the usual passing and fluency in their play. Bassett's news also got worse when it was revealed that Bath Buccs H were pulling out of the league meaning the 9-2 victory of them would not count. Wootton Basset will regroup and build upon their performances hopefully with a full team next week when they host Bath Buccs F.
