West Wilts C 0 - 5 Wootton Bassett 2nd XI

Bassett needed to raise their level of performance coming into their first away game of the season on Saturday. Bassett started as they meant to go on, some good passing created opportunities for Martyn Chivers who was unlucky not to score. The first goal of the game came from a good ball onto the back post, which was pounced on by Anthony Matthews who struck it home. The visitors then stretched their lead from a Lawrence Winter reverse hit. Bassett could have had several more before half time and would have stretched their lead but for some good work from the home ‘keeper.

Bassett started the second half even stronger with some good play from the whole team. Tom Marmoy and Martyn Chivers pushed forward from the back to help create chances for the midfield and forwards. Bassett further extended their lead when Ross Pinnuck’s powerful drag flick beat the ‘keeper form a penalty corner. Grant Kirkup scored Bassett’s fourth goal of the game with a thunderous shot which flew past the keeper. West Wilts looked threatening on the counter more than once but were stopped through some good saves from Jack Rose and some brilliant defensive play from the Bassett back line. Wilts’ best chance of the game was stopped by a brilliant save off the line from defensive maestro Eliot King. The final goal of the game came from another Lawrence Winter strike, this time slapping it past the keeper on his forehand. A great team performance culminated in the side’s first clean sheet of the season. Bassett will need to maintain this form to keep themselves at the top of Wilts & NE Somerset Division 1 going into a tough series of fixtures in the coming weeks.
