A strong second half performance gives Bassett the win on the first day of the season.

Wootton Bassett 2s would have been excused for being a bit rusty in their first league game of the season on Saturday. Coming off very few pre-season friendlies, and adapting to a new formation, nerves were high before the match. The game started at a frantic pace and it was not long before captain fantastic Mike Davies scored the first goal of the game for Bassett (his first in over a season). However, Bassett then switched off and conceded two quick goals from the strong City of Bath team. Midway through the first half Bassett got the equaliser through a Lawrence Winter reverse hit which beat the impressive visiting ‘keeper. In the closing minutes of the half Bassett seized control. Eventually a good passing move led to Matt Jakubiec converting a good chance to put the home team into the lead at half time.

At the start of the second half both teams were quickly out the traps, but it was Bath who managed to equalise. After the goal Bassett pulled their socks up and some great movement and passing from the midfield and forwards led to some good chances for the home team. It wasn’t long before Bassett regained the lead. A good pass into the D was pounced upon by Anthony Matthews who slammed the ball home with a powerful tomahawk. The visiting team began to tire in the mid-autumn sunshine and Bassett’s passing game wore them down further. Matt Jakubiec quickly added his second of the match in his first game for Bassett in three years. The scoring wasn’t finished and Jake Nunns added a sixth for Bassett from a clumsy penalty corner routine. Some more good passing from the home team led to the final goal of the match; Lawrence Winter adding the final touch after two brilliant saves from the away ‘keeper.

All in all a strong performance from Bassett against a strong City of Bath team in their opening game of the season.
